On April 23, 2020, rapper and hip hop artist Fred the Godson (1985–2020) died in a New York City hospital from complications of COVID-19. He was 35 years old. Born Frederick Thomas in the South Bronx, New York, Fred the Godson broke into the music world in 2010 with Armageddon, a mixtape. Although he never secured a major record deal, he was well known on New York rap radio. In 2019, his career picked up and, on March 20, 2020, just a couple of weeks before he tested positive for the coronavirus, he released his last mixtape, Payback.
