Tituba Indian

In 1692, Tituba Indian, who was brought on a slave ship to Salem, Massachusetts, was indicted for black magic because of the tales she told to white girls about the magic and mysteries of Barbados, where she had been formerly enslaved after being captured in Central or South America. The trial of Tituba (spelled Titibe in the court records) marked the beginning of the Salem witch trials of 1692–1693.
