Africa Burk

In 1777, Africa Burk, enslaved in Providence, enlisted in Rhode Island’s black regiment, becoming one of 5,000 African Americans who fought on the American side during the Revolution. In 1783, at the close of the war, he was granted his freedom from slavery, but like other black soldiers, was penniless, having never received the compensation promised at enlistment.
